I never blogged about it, but this summer I gave in and read the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. I KNOW. I should have known better. I managed to finish all three, but was not a fan. Basically, I don’t get all the hype. The writing is atrocious. And I wanted to kill the main character. It was the first book I have ever read where I actually rolled my eyes while skimming the page.
However, when I was asked by BlogHer Book Club to review a similar autobiographical account of what it’s really like to be in the type of relationship described in 50 Shades, I decided to check it out. Diary of a Submissive by Sophie Morgan is the real life account of a woman’s journey through self discovery and a series of D/s relationships.
For one, the writing was so much better. While I don’t identify with the lifestyle, the details and experiences Morgan discusses of her relationships are shocking yet intriguing. In 50 Shades of Grey I didn’t buy the main character’s motives for being a submissive, but in Diary of a Submissive, Sophie appears to be an intelligent and independent (professionally at least) woman.
Anyway, if you were pulled into the 50 Shades fad like me, then you might enjoy a more realistic and honest look into this whole D/s lifestyle.
