Day in the Life: February 12, 2014

{ 4 comments }

I always love reading ‘day in the life’ posts on other people’s blogs. For some reason it’s fascinating to me how different people spend their days.

I’ve been wanting to do one myself for awhile and finally captured a full day last week. I’m pretty sure that when I tell most people what I do for my day job, they have no clue what I actually do. My job title is Communications Manager for the Fayetteville Visitors Bureau. Still confused? Social media, web design, public relations, graphic design, event planning, media relations -that sort of thing.  The nature of my job is that there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ day, but here’s what my day looked like last Wednesday, February 12.

6:40 a.m. : Alarm goes off, hit snooze

6:50 a.m. : Alarm goes off again, lay in bed and check Twitter and emails until finally getting out of bed around 7

day_in_the_life2

7:15 a.m. : Out of the shower. I only wash my hair about once every three days, and today is unfortunately one of them. Blow drying my hair is not one of my favorite activities.

7:35 a.m. : Finish fixing hair, try to decide on an outfit. Finally get dressed, then remember I have to film an interview later in the morning and quickly change into a different dress.

7:55 a.m. : Running late as usual. Quickly make a cup of coffee to-go and a smoothie -run out the door and put my makeup on in the car (sorry Dad, it’s true – I promise I only do it at stoplights)

8:15 a.m. : Get to work and chug my coffee, my smoothie, and a giant glass of water. Too many drinks, but what’s a girl to do?

8:40 a.m. : Respond to emails and schedule Facebook and Twitter posts for later in the day.

9:00 a.m. : Briefing with our group tour manager Julie to discuss and practice answers to the scripted questions that the state Parks & Tourism office sent over before our interview

9:40 a.m. : Crew arrives to film our segment that will air during the Arkansas Governor’s Conference on Tourism in March.

10:00 a.m. : Lights, camera, action. Julie goes first and then I hop in to answer questions about social media and our marketing strategy. Julie snaps this hilarious picture. Hoping that expression doesn’t make it in the final cut…

10:45 a.m. : Done with filming. Respond to more emails and finish a blog post for our website.

11:30 a.m. : Send out Golden Age Games press release. Basically, a national ‘Olympics for Veterans’ that we are hosting in June. I think with the Winter Olympics going on it’s a great local hook. *It was! Story was picked up by several local media.

day_in_the_life7

12:00 p.m. : Walk down the street to meet my friend Paige for lunch at Hugo’s, one of my favorite Fayetteville restaurants. She is a marketer by day, blogger by night too, so we nerd out over burgers and a giant basket of fries.

day_in_the_life8

1:30 p.m. : Return voicemails I missed during lunch. Try to track down visuals of past events (photos and video) for the press release I sent out earlier in the day per a media request.

day_in_the_life9

2:00 p.m. : Log in to Hootsuite (my social media management system) and track, respond to, and schedule a few more posts.  I feel like my screen is a metaphor for my life. So many tabs at once.

day_in_the_life10

3:00 p.m. : Planning meeting with Drew from our advertising agency. We discuss our upcoming media buys (i.e. where we place ads) and an alternative solution to our need for new photography.

day_in_the_life11

4:30 p.m. : Still meeting with Drew. My boss has joined us and we go over our 2014 visitor’s guide. All those post-its are my notes.

5:15 p.m. : Leave work and stop by Sam’s Club to pick up some groceries and dinner for Josh and Alex. Drop off the food at the front door and try not to cry. *This is an odd place to interject, but please keep my sweet friends in your thoughts. They are strong, but going through such a difficult time*

day_in_the_life12

7:00 p.m. : Heat leftovers from our early Valentine’s dinner the night before (bacon-wrapped chicken stuffed with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes from East Side Grill-so good) and fix a salad. I am currently obsessed with this salad and have been eating it almost daily. Green leaf lettuce, sauteed brussels sprouts and bacon, a heavy sprinkle of goat cheese and feta, lots of fresh black pepper, and oil and vinegar dressing.

8:00 p.m. : Zone out in front of the tv. Try to talk myself into working out, but I watch last week’s episode of Downton Abbey instead.

day_in_the_life13

9:30 p.m. : Turn off the tube and curl up in my bed with my book. I’m reading Jim Henson, a biography by Brian Jay Jones and it is AMAZING. And way overdue to the library. Whoops.

11:00 p.m. Shit. How is it already 11? Close my book, set my alarm and get ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

So that’s it. Hopefully now you have a pretty good idea of what a ‘normal’ day looks like for me at this point in my life. I’m sure in ten, hell, two years it will look completely different- but that’s what it’s all about, right?

Maddox3Birthday-4

My nephew Maddox turned three on Monday. We celebrated with a small family party at my in-laws’ house last Saturday.

On Saturday morning we woke up to a beautiful blanket of snow which was quite fitting considering how the little guy made his entrance three years prior.

In addition to snow, we had plenty of good food, cake, and presents.

I made him a Mike from Monsters Inc out of fleece and felt as well as a race car-themed ‘M’ for his wall. Both super easy and cute. Both Pinterest inspired.

Crappy iPhone photos were inspired by laziness.

I feel like these next three photos capture Maddox’s relationship with Uncle Jacob and Aunt Jessi pretty well.

I had been especially weepy because we were deep in mourning for our friends so I made sure to get in extra hugs all day whether or not the birthday boy was having it. The little stinker.
